Day Trip: From the Bottom and Back

Distance: The trail begins at the shuttle stop at Temple of Sinawava and follows a one mile paved trail to the river. There is no marked destination, so you can hike as short or long as you want. Lots of hikers try to get to Orderville Canyon which is a tributary creek to the Virgin River. If you are traveling with young children, you are wise to go slow and not plan on going too far. Going past Big Springs requires a backcountry permit.

Baby Jogger Accessibility: The first mile is very jogger friendly–it is paved and wide. There is absolutely no way to take a jogger in the river.

Difficulty: There is little to no elevation gain the first mile. Travel is very easy even for the smallest hikers. Travel in the river can range from moderate to difficult depending on the current conditions. Preschoolers and youngers will need to be carried. Travel with infants and toddlers is only advised under the most ideal conditions–low river, warm day.

Cool things for kids along the way: The hanging gardens are fun for the kids to check out. The trickling water through the canyon walls is a big hit too. And of course, playing in the river is super fun.

Additional notes: YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST CHECK WITH THE RANGERS ABOUT TRAIL/RIVER CONDITIONS BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT. FLASH FLOODS CAN AND DO HAPPEN. We did this hike in July, 2009. Travel in the winter months is completely different!

Trail shots: Check out the slide show for more. Text is by mom and audio is from the kids!
