This is everything a fleece should be and everything a nursing shirt should be. If I’d had it during those first months when my son was a newborn and I was a bleary-eyed mama wandering the house, I don’t think this fleece would have left my body. It is super soft, almost silky, really. If my newborn’s skin couldn’t be right against mine, then this is the next best thing. Some of the silkiness has decreased a bit with washings, though it is still nice, soft fleece. The styling of the pullover is pretty sleek, with curved vertical seams giving it a “girl cut,” but it also somehow manages to be generous through the middle. Mountain Blue Eyes calls it “sized to fit post-partum bodies,” and it is. My size “small” is plenty big on my more medium-sized frame, with room for layers underneath.
The nursing access is through hidden zippers in the cleverly located vertical seams. (Jen Aist calls them “nip zips”!) My friends haven’t even noticed that it’s nursing-wear. The zippers, like all hidden zippers, are easy enough to pull down one-handed, though a little bit hard to pull back up one-handed. But I think the hidden zippers are worth that little inconvenience. The fleece is fantastic in the outdoors. I carry it in my backpack when hiking and toss it on when we take a rest stop to keep me from getting cold on cool days. We can nurse in comfort while I take in the views. I take it backpacking and car camping and wear it from the moment we make camp until the moment we break camp. It keeps me covered not only from the cool/cold air, but also from hungry mosquitoes who’d love to get at my exposed side or back! I’ll definitely take it with me skiing and snowshoeing this winter – no more cold belly when nursing – and I can sit down and lean back into a snowy hillside to nurse comfortably – no snow up my shirt!
The only design-flaw is a teeny-tiny one – hardly worth mentioning. Sometimes when I pull the zipper back up, the fabric zipper backing comes through and pokes out of the top of the zipper opening. It’s easy enough to poke back through once I notice it, but I’m sure Mountain Blue Eyes could figure out a way to tack this down inside the shirt so it doesn’t pop out and make obvious the hidden zipper!
This is a great item – I’ll get lots of use out of it nursing my wee one, and because it doesn’t look like nursing gear, I’ll still be wearing it long after he’s weaned.
