With the holidays fast approaching, the question of what to give for gifts comes up a lot. This year, why not give a gift that will last a lifetime—the gift of the outdoors. Get every baby, pregnant family and kid you know something to get them outside. Need some ideas? One of my all time favorites is a hammock. Trek Lite and Eno both make wonderful backcountry models that are light weight, easy to pack and amazingly comfortable. You can bring them to the park, set them up in your yard or take them with you on a hike. What pregnant mommy wouldn’t love to curl up in a hammock and gently sway the afternoon away? For the baby on your list, how about a rain suit from Oaki wear? These bomber suits provide full body coverage from wind, rain and even snow. They are well built and priced right. Toddlers and preschoolers with their burgeoning sense of independence, love to carry their own stuff on outings. Kelty and Osprey both make daypacks sized perfectly for these little adventurers. Want to step it up a notch? Fill the pack with hiking essentials like a whistle, magnifying glass, journal, colored pencils or crayons, a bug collecting jar, stainless water bottle and a yummy protein bar. If your friends are new to getting outside with their kids, throw in a copy of Babes in the Woods: Hiking, Camping & Boating with Babies & Young Children by Jennifer Aist. The book is practical and sure to inspire anyone with little ones to get outside—everyday.
