Findings: Mountain Hardwear Super Scrambler – This superlight pack didn’t impress me a whole lot when I first got it, other than the obvious lightness. I was coming from a Lowe Contour IV 90L, in which I can carry or strap an F250, which I’ve had for years. So I was expecting buckles, straps and pockets everywhere. What I got was a light, capable, tough skinned pack with just the essentials. External straps on either side carry a rolled rainfly and pole pouch. I did wish for a pocket at the bottom, as the Lowe had, just for peace of mind. Losing a pole pouch on the trail would be a disaster. I just rolled the poles in my antiskid mat ( the rubber stuff you put under carpets to keep them from sliding on hardwood, I use it to anchor my sleeping bag to pad and pad to tent floor. ) and they held just fine. I ended up having to invest in a smaller sleeping bag, as my 1990 Slumberjack, compressing to the size of a small Hyundai, wouldn’t fit. So I bought a Slumberjack 20° Ultimate bag, which compresses just right. So the crowning test was a 5 day trip to Caines Head State Rec Area, in Seward. The pack performed admirably, in all ways, save one: the mesh hip belt hurts. For a day pack, or overnight back, a mesh belt would be acceptable. Not for a multiday pack. This pack is a great, super light, functional pack that will work for you, but the hip belt may take some modification on your part, by inserting some foam.
